Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their proli­c output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release,  100 Days, 100 Nights , has sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. The follow-up  I Learned the Hard Way , their fourth full-length on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records marks a bold step forward for a band who almost singlehandedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound.
Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records' House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her ­rmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in "The Game Gets Old" at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style "Mama Don't Like My Man" at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline.  Drive-by Truckers --The Big To-Do

 

Drive-By Truckers know all about big to-dos, whether it's releasing a full-blown Southern Rock Opera or such sweeping conceptual pieces as The Dirty South and their last studio album in 2008, Brighter Than Creation's Dark By those standards the band's latest release, The Big To-Do, is a modest affair: a collection of unconnected-though certainly related-songs that traverse all sorts of Southern terrain and situations. The group's songwriting trio (mainly Patterson Hood) offers the usual array of potent guitar riffs, stomping hard rock and vivid lyricism. The last of which particularly surfaces in Hood's chronicle of "The Flying Wallendas" and the true-life murder tale "The Wig He Made Her Wear." The buoyant "This Fucking Job" and the boogie "Get Downtown" speak to the current economic climate, while the Truckers shift gears with the ethereal ambience of the Shonna Tucker-sung "You Got Another" and the gentle album closer "Eyes Like Glue." Those tracks also highlight the impact that keyboardist Jay Gonzalez is making on the band.

 Jimi Hendrix --Valleys of Neptune

 

 After 40 years, a number of ill-conceived posthumous albums, and countless bootlegs, one would almost have to be skeptical of a new album billed as "12 previously unreleased studio recordings -- almost 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix." The good news is that Valleys of Neptune largely delivers on that promise. Even hardcore collectors will likely be surprised at how much of this album they haven't heard. But much of this material has been available before in some form, official and otherwise. Although there were tons of posthumous overdubs, elements of these very versions of "Stone Free" and "Hear My Train Comin'" were used as building blocks for the versions on Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning, respectively. Additionally, this version of "Stone Free" was included on 2000's The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, the only difference being that Noel Redding's bass and vocals were replaced with Billy Cox's bass from a slightly later studio session. An excerpt of the tune "Valleys of Neptune" was released as part of the Lifelines radio program box set, but that track ("Mr. Bad Luck" [aka "Look Over Yonder"]) and "Lullaby for the Summer" (basically an instrumental version of "Ezy Rider") were all well-known to collectors. However, Eddie Kramer's fresh mixes make them all sound better than ever. While it doesn't rise to the level of his other studio albums, Valleys of Neptune is a welcome catalog addition from a tremendous talent who died too young.

 The Chieftains & Ry Cooder --San Patricio

 

 

To delve into history is to reach into mystery. Music is a time-honored method for investigating both. The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney has been obsessed with the historical account of the San Patricios, a band of immigrant Irish soldiers who deserted the American Army during the Mexican-American War in 1846 to fight for the other side, against the Manifest Destiny ideology of James Polk's America. Moloney’s Chieftains and co-producer Ry Cooder decided to try to tell it musically. The result brings this fascinatingly complex tale to life in the modern world and examines issues of discrimination, conscience, and empire.
The knowledge of Argentinian radio programmer Guadalupe Jolicouer pointed Moloney to traditional Mexican sources -- canciones, sons, norteños, rancheras, boleros, and polkas from the period. Moloney sorted them. He then selected, arranged, and added music he knew from the period that echoed the Mexican sources. He and Cooder rounded up the numerous players, instruments, and locales necessary. Mexican performers such as los Tigres del Norte, Lila Downs, Chavela Vargas, los Folkloristas, los Camperos de Valles, Paddy Moloney, and many others are featured alongside the Chieftains, Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Galician piper Carlos Nunez, Liam Neeson, and Van Dyke Parks. Sessions were taped in Mexico, Spain, Los Angeles, New York, and Dublin. Sung in Spanish and English, the collection illumines the San Patricios’ chapter in Irish history, which was considered shameful until recently -- though in Mexico they’ve always been regarded as heroes. Through utterly compelling and ingenious musical preservation and invention, the album asks questions about commonalities between cultures; it offers evidence that history, when told personally enough, reflects shared experiences across territorial and chronological lines, and stands outside any “official” narrative, mirroring back to listeners what they can feel empathy for and sympathize with.

Soundtrack --Crazy Heart

 

 

The Deluxe Edition of the soundtrack for Crazy Heart contains all 23 tracks that appeared in the film, in the original sequence they appeared. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett and contains 16 songs from the film starring Jeff Bridges. The movie is dedicated to Stephen Bruton -- a legendary Texas musician and lifelong friend of Burnett -- who wrote or co-wrote most of the original music performed by Bridges and Ryan Bingham here. He died from cancer shortly after finishing the project. While officially based on a book by songwriter Hank Thompson, the film took just as much of its inspiration from the life of Bruton, who lived the life that Bridges' Bad Blake did for over three decades. Musically it’s the performances by Bridges that are the most arresting here. He can deliver a rollicking honky tonk song (“Somebody Else”), a lost-on-the-highway-of-life song (the punchy blues-rocker “Fallin' and Flyin’”), a love song (“Hold on You”), or a beer weeper (the Greg Brown-penned "Brand New Angel") with the requisite amount of bravado, grit, and tenderness of a seasoned country artist. Bingham, a songwriter and relative newcomer, proves himself a worthy counterpart in his performances -- especially on the film's theme song, "The Weary Kind." The soundtrack also gifts the listener a world-weary a cappella performance of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever” by Robert Duvall and a hardcore trucker anthem in “Gone Gone Gone” by Colin Farrell! There’s also a killer duet version of “Fallin' & Flyin'” by Farrell and Bridges. The rest of the set is filled out with cuts by Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, the Louvin Brothers, Lydia Mendoza, Kitty Wells, George Jones, Lucinda Williams, the Delmore Brothers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Sam Phillips (the female songwriter, not the Sun Records founder). The original tunes are played by an alternating cast including Burnett, Bruton, Greg Leisz, Jay Bellerose, Buddy Miller, Dennis Crouch, Joel Guzman, Thomas Canning, and Patrick Warren. The catalog material is well chosen, not obvious, and adds much to the overall listening experiencing. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

 Mose Allison--The Way Of The World

 

Mose Allison basically retired from studio recording after 1998’s dynamite Gimcracks and Gewgaws. Retired, that is, until producer Joe Henry met him in 2008 and dogged him until he graciously caved in. He coaxed Allison  into his basement studio and cut the seven originals and five covers that became The Way of the World with a host of players from his own stable in five days. At 82, Allison  is as smart, cagey, and inventive as ever. All but one of these cuts feature his weathered but still wiry dry baritone voice that exudes a trademark jazz singer cum beat poet’s phrasing. For anyone who’s seen him in the last decade -- or heard his jaw-dropping Live in London recordings -- his keyboard skills are sharp as an Argentine stiletto: give a listen to the lone instrumental, “Crush.”  Allison's elastic harmonic sense is as beautifully unruly as Monk's, yet his improvisational ideas are carried by a nimble-fingered force worthy of Bud Powell. The Way of the World is not a comeback album; Henry  had a nagging suspicion that Allison  might have something new to say and Allison  obliged. In the process they created a gem of an album that proves the pianist and songwriter still has many tricks up his elegantly tailored, eternally hip sleeve. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
