From our fabulous music town of Portland, Amelia isn't just another pop singer missing her last name, but a quartet with singer-drummer Teisha Helgerson and multiple instrumentalists Scott Weddle, Jesse Emerson, and Mark Orton (Tin Hat.) With a breathy, mid-range vocalist and three multiple instrumentalists, Amelia displays a great deal of versatility on A Long, Lovely List of Repairs. Perhaps the title will seem a bit nonsensical, but it does a good job at suggesting the smoky Americana that the band delivers on songs like "Tragedy" and "Farewell."

On his 11th album, England's most famous left-winger embraces the right-wing mantra of choice. Buy this double-disc set and you get to choose between full-service band versions or raw solo interpretations of its 12 excellent songs. But then, Billy Bragg has always done a fine job of being all things to all men. As the title suggests, "Mr. Love & Justice" sees equal measure placed upon affairs of state ("Sing Their Souls Back Home," "O Freedom") and the heart ("M for Me," "Something Happened"), resulting in his most satisfying original collection since 1991's "Don't Try This at Home." And whether you prefer him shouting vitriol on the picket line or whispering sweet nothings in the bedroom, you'll find plenty to enjoy here.—Mark Sutherland, Billboard.com

Flight of the Conchords --Flight Of The Conchords

This self-titled debut album by HBO's kiwi wunderkinds is an intelligently playful parody romp through about 10 genres in 15 tracks. Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie set themselves apart from trashy pop-culture comics with lyrics that employ childlike wonder rather than childish humor. Album highlights "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros" (with the signature line "Ain't no parties like my nana's tea parties") and "Ladies of the World" (which rhymes "cutleries" with "knees") lean on goofiness rather than offensiveness in a way that is refreshing. There's something slightly missing for the listener who's seen them live or watched the show, as part of their charm is definitely in the visual delivery (and the spontaneous keytar solos). But the lyrics hold their own as comedy poetry, and the album as a whole is stuffed with feel-good laughs.—Lavinia Jones Wright, Billboard.com

remR.E.M. --Accelerate

In every way Accelerate is the opposite of Around the Sun: at 36 minutes, it's defiantly lean, it's heavy on Peter Buck's guitars and Mike Mills backing vocals, its songs don't drift, they attack. Even the songs constructed on acoustics feel like they're rockers, maybe because they hearken back to the eerie, ramshackle grace of "Swan Swan H" whose riff echoes through both "Houston" and "Until the Day Is Done." This is not the only time that R.E.M. deliberately refers to the past on Accelerate, but reverential self-reference is the whole idea of this project: they're embracing their past, building upon the legacy and the very sound of such underground rock landmarks as Lifes Rich Pageant and Document. Not that this album could be mistaken for an exhumed classic from the '80s: Michael Stipe's lyrics are forthright and never elliptical, and the same could be said about the music, as it's sonically streamlined and precise, hallmarks of a veteran band. One of the benefits of being veterans is knowing how to create a record this focused, and Accelerate benefits greatly from its concentrated blast of guitars, as the brevity of the album makes R.E.M. seem vital even as they're dredging up the past. Pitted against the jarring mechanical stop-starts of first single "Machine Gun" or the chase-scene-paced opener "Silence", Beth Gibbons sounds like both a defiant accuser and someone clinging on for dear life. Quieter numbers, like the slow-build electronic ballad "The Rip" or the softer moments of the cabaret highwire act "Hunter", highlight the fragility in her voice. And since almost every song on Third addresses some sort of emotional or mental helplessness-- typically a deep and profound sense of loss and isolation-- it's almost as though this shift in sonic identity is there to mask the fact that this is an incredibly bleak record lyrically. Gibbons' wounded tone can take commonplace-on-paper sentiments ("I'd like to laugh at what you said but I just can't find a smile"; "I can't deny what I've become/ I'm just emotionally undone") and give them a kind of pathos that's almost uncomfortably voyeuristic to listen to.

m83M83--Saturdays=Youth

After a pair of impossibly huge, overpowering records, M83's Anthony Gonzalez changes up his sound, ditching maximalism for beauty and drama. His new album-- dedicated to "all the friends, music, movies, joints, and crazy teachers that made my teenage years so great!"-- is dense with 1980s new wave tropes and reflects the soft-focused mythology of eternal summers and young love. Where previous albums saluted the doomed grandeur of The Cure and the retro-futurism of Blade Runner, Saturdays=Youth pays homage to Cocteau Twins (whom Thomas has also produced) and the teen dramas of filmmaker John Hughes. It's dense with new wave tropes: the chrome-plated guitars and aqueous keyboards on "Kim & Jessie", the decadent synthetic toms on the otherwise cloudy "Skin of the Night", the funk guitars and shivering cymbals of the masterful "Couleurs". Many modern bands have appropriated these iconic touchstones with a wink, a revision, or both. M83's reverent take is less common, bringing to mind Lansing-Dreiden's underappreciated 80s throwback The Dividing Island.
